The Son of Sam Killer
David Berkowitz also known as “the Son of Sam” or the “44 caliber killer” (for his choice in weapon), killed 6 people and wounded 7 he is to this day in prison.
David Berkowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York June 1, 1953 then was adopted by a wealthy family in the same area.
John Vincent Sanders (a psychologist and reporter) wrote in his studies that “David’s childhood was somewhat troubled. Although of above-average intelligence, he lost interest in learning at an early age and began an infatuation with petty larceny and pyromania.”
Later David would join the army. He served in the United States and South Korea for 3 years. When he got back he tried to track down his birth parents. He was successful but only in finding his mother, for his father was deceased. This news was extremely disturbing for him and one of his major braking points, he writes.
David says that he joined a cult in 1975.He explains that the group introduced him to drug usage and sadistic pornography; this is probably what led to his choice in victims; being “young pretty girls” as he put it. (Sadism is the derivation of pleasure as a result of inflicting pain or watching pain inflicted on others.)
The Killing Begins…
On July 29, 1976, Donna Lauria and Jody Valenti are in a car parked outside of Donnas’ parent’s apartment. Around the same time Rose Lauria (mom) and her husband mike come home. Then as Donna and Judy were leaving for a walk, a man would approach them. He pulled a gun from the bag he had in his hand, and then with one fire killed Donna instantly, with the second he, shot Judy in the thigh, the last missed. But he says he in interrogation meeting he was aiming for Judy’s head.
Judy never got a good look at Berkowitz. After that David killed 5 more people and along the way left this note and was very happy to go more in-depth to it when he was captured.
David left this note after one of his killings saying that, his neighbor’s dog, Sam had possessed him and told him that Sam must have the blood of young attractive women.
This is the note, misspellings intact.
I am deeply hurt by your calling me a women hater. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the “Son of Sam.” I am a little “brat”. When father Sam gets drunk he gets mean. He beats his family. Sometimes he ties me up to the back of the house. Other times he locks me in the garage. Sam loves to drink blood. “Go out and kill” commands father Sam. Behind our house some rest. Mostly young — raped and slaughtered — their blood drained — just bones now. Papa Sam keeps me locked in the attic, too. I can’t get out but I look out the attic window and watch the world go by. I feel like an outsider. I am on a different wave length then everybody else — programmed too kill. However, to stop me you must kill me. Attention all police: Shoot me first — shoot to kill or else. Keep out of my way or you will die! Papa Sam is old now. He needs some blood to preserve his youth. He has had too many heart attacks. Too many heart attacks. “Ugh, me hoot it urts sonny boy.” I miss my pretty princess most of all. She’s resting in our ladies house but I’ll see her soon. I am the “Monster” — “Beelzebub” — the “Chubby Behemouth.” I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game — tasty meat. The wemon of Queens are z prettyist of all. I must be the water they drink. I live for the hunt — my life. Blood for papa. Mr. Borrelli, sir, I dont want to kill anymore no sir, no more but I must, “honour thy father.” I want to make love to the world. I love people. I don’t belong on Earth. Return me to yahoos. To the people of Queens, I love you. And I wa want to wish all of you a happy Easter. May God bless you in this life and in the next and for now I say goodbye and goodnight. Police — Let me haunt you with these words; I’ll be back! I’ll be back! To be interrpreted as — bang, bang, bang, bank, bang — ugh!! Yours in murder Mr. Monster.
In most of his notes lied his symbol.
After being caught by the NYPD he was jailed for 25 years to life for 6 consecutive life sentences. He has been denied parole by New York authorities for the sixth time, as of may 2012. He is up for another parole hearing in 2014. He now is the prison pastor and is part of a food drive in Queens. David said that Jesus Christ has forgiven him for his sins.
